About
Adorable Animals is a permanent library of adorable animal pictures. It started from Meg's Pinterest board, Adorable Animals, and grows over time as more sources get added. It is not tied to any single product — it is a shared library that several of Jason's products draw on for imagery, so a picture only has to be found once.
Every picture links back to where it was found, and its licence status is recorded per image (default: unknown), so nothing here gets treated as free to redistribute until that has actually been established for that specific image.
How it works
- 1. Ingest with provenance. Every picture is pulled in along with where it came from: the source (for example Pinterest), the source URL, the board, and the outbound link the picture points to, if it has one.
- 2. Store in one place. Each picture becomes one row in a database — id, source, dimensions, licence status — and its bytes are cached once, so every product that wants an animal picture reads from the same library instead of keeping its own copy.
- 3. Products ask the API. A product calls the read-only API instead of bundling image files into its own build. A licence status recorded once here applies everywhere it is used, the moment it changes.
Use it in your product
Built for products that need a friendly animal picture without maintaining their own
image library. Three read-only endpoints, all JSON, all served with
Access-Control-Allow-Origin: * so a product's own frontend can call them
directly.
GET /adorable/api/daily
One deterministic picture per calendar date. The same date always resolves to the same image, so this is the "today's animal" feature: call it once per day per product and cache the response for the rest of the day.
curl "https://jasonpaez.com/adorable/api/daily?product=your-product-id"
GET /adorable/api/images?n=12&product=<id>
A sample of images, up to 100 at a time. Pass seed=<value> for a
stable ordering instead of a fresh random draw on every call, useful when a template
needs to render the same set of images every time.
curl "https://jasonpaez.com/adorable/api/images?n=12&product=your-product-id"
GET /adorable/api/stats
Totals by licence status and source, so a product can check how many
permitted images actually exist before building a feature around them.
curl "https://jasonpaez.com/adorable/api/stats"
A few use cases already live
- Fortuity Cycle calls
/api/dailyonce a day for a rotating "today's animal" image. - Fondly calls
/api/imagesfor a handful of animal backgrounds whenever someone starts a new collage. - Celebration Studios calls
/api/imageswith a fixedseedper template, so a given template always renders with the same stable set of images.
Any surface another person will see must filter to license_status:
"permitted" only, never "unknown" — see the FAQ below.
Privacy
No accounts. No cookies of our own. This page does not track who is viewing it beyond anonymous page analytics, which mask anything typed and any displayed text and respect Do Not Track.
Every image links out to where it was found; visiting that link is between you and that site. Nothing here asks for a sign-in or hands your information to anyone.
FAQ
Where do the pictures come from?
Most of the library started from Meg's Pinterest board, Adorable Animals. New sources get added as they're found, and every image records which source it came from.
Can I use them in my own app?
Licence status is recorded per image, and it defaults to unknown. Products that show these pictures to other people must filter to images marked permitted, never unknown, and can check /adorable/api/stats to see how many qualify.
How is today's animal chosen?
Deterministically, from the date. The same calendar date always resolves to the same
image, so /adorable/api/daily returns one consistent pick per day instead
of a random one.
Can I add more sources?
Yes. The ingest pipeline is not tied to Pinterest specifically; any source with real animal pictures and a real source URL can be added, with its own provenance recorded per image.
How do I report a picture that should not be here?
Email jason@jasonpaez.com with the image's
link (the /adorable/img/<id> URL, or the page it appeared on) and it
will be reviewed and hidden if it should not be here.
